Romantasy or fantasy?
In romantasy the love story is the plot, not a side quest. The magic, the war and the prophecy are all there to make falling in love harder. If you’d rather the quest came first and the romance was a bonus, you’re probably after fantasy instead.
The big five
These five turn up again and again. Each one is a promise about how the story will feel, which is exactly why they are the best way to choose a book you can’t see.
Enemies to lovers
They start out wanting to kill each other. Sometimes literally. Rival courts, opposing sides of a war, a mortal and the fae prince she was sent to destroy. Every argument crackles, every sharp word hides something softer, and the moment one of them finally admits it is worth every page it took to get there.
Why it works: the tension is built in. Two people with every reason to hate each other falling anyway is about as satisfying as a love story gets.
Fated mates
The universe has decided. A bond, a goddess, an ancient magic or a mark that appears overnight says these two belong together, and usually at least one of them is not happy about it. The story is less about whether they end up together and more about how hard they fight it first.
Why it works: it turns the romance into destiny, and gives every stolen glance the weight of something that was always meant to be.
Slow burn
Hundreds of pages of longing. Almost-touches, interrupted moments, one of them bleeding and the other refusing to admit how scared they were. A slow burn makes you wait for it, and then makes it count.
Why it works: anticipation. By the time anything happens you have been rooting for it for so long that it lands like a thunderclap.
Forbidden love
A vow they can’t break. A law that says death for anyone caught. A crown, a rival kingdom, a sister’s betrothed. They absolutely should not fall for each other, and they absolutely do.
Why it works: the stakes. When loving someone could cost everything, every choice to love them anyway means something.
Forced proximity
One tent. One bed. One very long journey through hostile territory. Forced proximity puts two people somewhere they can’t escape each other, and eventually can’t escape how they feel either.
Why it works: nowhere to hide. Walls come down fastest when there’s no room to put them back up.

- Morally gray love interest: not quite a villain, not quite a hero, and entirely too charming about it.
- Touch her and die: the protective one, who would burn a kingdom to the ground for the person they love.
- Found family: a ragtag band of misfits who become each other’s home.
- Chosen one: a nobody with a destiny they never asked for.
